The Campus Campaign - A Culture of Philanthropy

Susquehanna University's campus community plays an important role in the Changing Lives, Building Futures campaign. In fact, since the campaign began a few years ago, current and retired members of the university's faculty and staff have already contributed more than $1.2 million toward the $70 million goal.

Beyond the monetary significance, faculty and staff contributions serve as a vote of confidence in what happens at Susquehanna each and every day.

Yes, campaigns are about raising money, but Changing Lives, Building Futures is also about developing a culture in which donors contribute because they agree that growth and progress are important, and that resources and support from everyone are needed to advance Susquehanna.

At the end of the campaign, the hope is that we will not only have raised $70 million, but that we will have traveled light years in creating a culture of philanthropy at Susquehanna.

In addition to a number of specific interests members of the campus community can support, two funding priorities are being highlighted during the campus campaign:

New Horizons Scholarship for Cross-Cultural Learning

Supporting Science through Green Initiatives

New Horizons Scholarship for Cross-Cultural Learning

This scholarship was established to reflect Susquehanna's commitment to helping young people reach their full potential and its belief that higher education prepares students for lives of achievement, leadership and service. The fund is designed to support students who seek to fulfill the cross-cultural learning requirement within the new central curriculum. Students will

  • develop a complex understanding of culture;
  • recognize how their attitudes, behaviors and choices affect the quality of their cross-cultural experiences;
  • reflect on their personal growth, social responsibility, and the value of active participation in human society.

Gifts to this fund will support students who immerse themselves in a culture different from their own. Recipients will be selected on the basis of financial need. The Office of Financial Aid will direct the selection process.

Supporting Science through Green Initiatives

Plans for the new science building demonstrate Susquehanna University's commitment to sustainability and environmental consciousness. The building is designed to meet or exceed the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification criteria. The "green" elements of the building include

  • the use of recycled materials in the construction;
  • an energy efficient HVAC system;
  • water reduction capabilities;
  • daylight harvesting;
  • a rooftop greenhouse.

Two naming opportunities have been developed in support of the new science building.

  • The first is an educational display planned for the lower floor. This area will provide visitors with information about such topics as LEED certification and energy consumption. Its construction will raise the building's LEED certification by one point.
  • The second naming opportunity is a periodic table of elements constructed as part of a courtyard patio at the north entrance of the building.

Gift amounts funding the science building's educational display are:

  • $450 for LEED Level I
  • $1,500 for LEED Level II

The gift amount funding the science building courtyard patio element paver is $5,000.

Donations to these initiatives are payable over three years.

Contributions to the campaign can be made in a variety of ways including payroll deduction.
